Carnations fit into two categories.... greenhouse or garden. Both types are perennial and require similar growing conditions. They are easy to grow and can flower in their first year if growing from cuttings. Either varieties can be used for the show bench.
Greenhouse varieties can be grown outside during the summer months but are generally not winter hardy as they don't like to be too wet and cold at the same time, so it is advisable to bring them into a greenhouse or conservatory end September / October and keep over winter inside. If in a heated environment many can still produce flowers during the winter months. We suggest growing 3 in a 5ltr pot, this makes it easier to move around and also to monitor watering & feeding. For impact planting why not put 3 of the same variety in the pot!! Some greenhouse varieties are scented these tend to be the more older types, like Malmaisons & Old Greenhouse, and the older varieties can be a little more temperamental and flower less frequently - but that's not to say they are not worth the space in the greenhouse!!
Garden Carnations are the hardy border carnations, now a rarity and not grown commercially. They have a relatively short flowering season but the colours, patterns and amazing scent makes up for it. They like a good free drained area with lots of sunshine.
Both carnation types require flowers to be supported and our tried and tested plant supports are ideal. As with any flowering plant feeding is essential to keep them performing at their peak. Both varieties can be grown for showing but it is recommended they are grown under the protection of glass to ensure the blooms are kept undamaged by the weather/wind.
