Carnations divide neatly into two catagories.... Garden or Greenhouse
Greenhouse varieties have fantastic tall flowering stems that are ideal for cut flowers - these are the type you find in florist shops! The modern varieties (Perpetual Flowering & Spray Carnations) repeat flower and are easy, prolific growers, whereas the older varieties (Old Greenhouse) still retain the clove scent that we all so love and adore. Malmaisons have been around since the 1800's and are richly clove scented, though these older varieties can be more prone to overwatering! However all of these can grow happily together in a pot, and can be positioned outside during the summer months. If you want to achive flowers 12 months of the year a heated greenhouse/conservatory is required.
Garden Carnations love a sunny, well drained position, they grow especially well on sandy or chalky soil, if you are on a heavy soil then create raised beds or grow them in large pots. They have a short flowering season but they more than make up for this when they come into flower - the colours are simply stunning, the scent amazing and we have over 70 different types to choose from.
As with all carnations, due to their flowering height, the flowers will require supporting and our tried & tested Plant Supports (found in our gardening aid section) are ideal, this practical method of support helps the plant grow in a purely natural way.
